Santa Barbara Community Climb 2001

2001 marked the first year Summit for Danny held a fund-raising climb in which the whole Santa Barbara community could participate. Santa Barbara's own picturesque mountainsides provided the perfect locale for climbers to make a difference with every step they took. More than 500 hikers, ranging from professional trailblazers to groups of teens and families of four, took part in the celebration raising over...toward the Daniel Bryant Youth & Family Treatment Center.

After riding a shuttle from the Sunken Gardens to the trailhead, hikers chose from three routes, ranging from the leisurely to the lung-busting. The five-mile Inspiration Point hike filled the trail with a stream of people making their way through the chaparral. At least a dozen people shouted, "I can see my house from here!" when they reached the top, peering down at a panorama of the city and the ocean.

When they made it back to the Sunken Gardens, the invigorated hikers were greeted with a huge party. They sat on the grass eating lunch provided by the Four Seasons Biltmore and bobbed their heads to the funky tunes of Santa Barbara's most popular club and party band, Area 51.

Fighting Back representatives took the stage to present Santa Barbara athlete Bob Bryant with an achievement award for his determination in starting the center. Bryant lost his son, Danny, to a heroin overdose in 1995. This tragic loss became the motivation for him to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro, and a peak in the Canadian Arctic, the first two fund-raisers.
